White Snakeroot (Ageratina altissima)
This rhizome-spreading perennial will quickly form a clump in woodland gardens and edges. Though it spreads quickly at first, it will settle over time and play nicely with other plants. It is deer resistant with a long bloom time, making it an important food source for pollinators late in the season.
Native range: Central and eastern North America, from Texas and Florida north to Maine and southern Canada
Size: 2-4 feet tall, space 12-18 inches apart
Growing conditions: Partial sun to shade, wet to medium to dry soil
Bloom period: July through October
Wildlife value: Attracts butterflies, bees, and other pollinators; larval host for Clymene moth, hitched dart moth, and other species; late-season nectar source when few other flowers are blooming; seeds eaten by birds
Garden benefits: Deer resistant, drought tolerant, late-season food source for pollinators
—
⚠️ Important note: Highly toxic to livestock and humans if consumed - contains tremetol toxin
