A fast-growing native shrub with graceful arching branches and outstanding four-season interest. Dense clusters of delicate white flowers give way to attractive reddish seed pods, while the distinctive exfoliating bark provides winter appeal. Native range: Eastern North America from Quebec to Georgia, west to Minnesota and Kansas

Size: 5-10 feet tall and wide, space 4-6 feet apart

Growing conditions: Full sun to partial shade, adaptable to wide range of soils from dry to moist; drought tolerant once established

Bloom period: Late spring to early summer (May-June)

Wildlife value: Rich nectar source attracts numerous bee species including specialist mining bees; hosts many moth species including Io moth and Large Maple Spanworm; provides nesting sites and cover for birds; supports diverse beneficial insects
